For the past couple of years before traveling I always made sure to take extra steps to support my immune system. I usually start about a week before traveling and usually continue while I am traveling as well. The one year I didn’t do this I ended up with an upper respiratory infection. So now I ALWAYS make sure I go the extra mile to support my entire family’s immune system before we travel. As you all should know by now I always go for the natural route when I can, so I put together a list of natural ways I support my immune system.
MANUKA HONEY
Manuka Honey has so many benefits, from wound healing, to digestive help, immune support, and energy-booster are just a few of the many benefits. It has also been shown to have antimicrobial properties.
What sets Manuka Honey apart from traditional honey, is the MGO component (Methylglyoxal). The higher the MGO concentration the more health benefits, especially its antimicrobial properties which is why Manuka Honey is used for medical purposes.
ADULT
I drink tea practically everyday so this is an easy way to incorporate Manuka Honey in your diet.
Here is my favorite tea recipe that I drink practically everyday at least a week before my travel to help support my immunes system.
1 cup of hot water
1 ginger tea bag
1 echinacea tea bag
lemon juice from 1/2 a lemon
1/2 a tsp of Manuka Honey
These Manuka Honey sticks are perfect for when you are traveling.
The Propolis Oral Spray is also a great way to get the benefits of Manuka Honey when you are on the go.
A great way to get all of your Manuka Honey goodies is with this Wellness Kit from PRI.
CHILDREN
These Manuka Honey lollipop are great for kids to help support their immune system. My son Aiden loves them! Make sure your child is being supervised while eating this, I only let Aiden have a lollipop if he is sitting in his chair or next to me sitting, NEVER if he is running around playing.
VITAMIN C
ADULTS
This is probably the most popular supplement known to help support your immune system.
This comes in lots of formulations, from tablets to lozenges, to powder packs to liquid. Our favorite is from Child Life Essentials it’s a liquid that actually taste good. Even though it says for children we all use it in the house because we all love the taste.
CHILDREN
I’ve been using this Vitamin C from ChildLife Essentials for Aiden since he was about 6 months old. I don’t usually give it to him everyday but since this pandemic he has been taking it quite often. When we are about to travel or if I know we are going to be around a lot of people I give it to him everyday at least a week before.
ECHINACEA
ADULT
This is something I started taking a few years ago, whenever I feel like I am getting sick or I am about to travel I start taking this. I don’t have a particular brand I like, I usually just buy whichever good quality brand I find on sale.
CHILDREN
I have been giving Echinacea to Aiden since he was about 6 months. I don’t don’t give this to him daily, only if it sounds like he is about to get sick, when we are about to travel or if I know we are going to be around a lot of people. In that case I give it to him everyday at least a week before.
MULTI VITAMINS
Multi Vitamins are a must if you are not eating a balanced diet on a daily basis. Let’s face it most of are not eating a healthy balanced diet.
ADULT
I like to look for vitamins that have the least amount of added junk in the ingredients. Here are a two of my favorite Adult multivitamin brands:
Garden of life
Ritual Vitamins
CHILDREN
My favorite vitamin for Aiden has been these ChildLife Essentials softmelts multivitamin. Make sure your child is able to chew properly before giving them any gummy or soft melt vitamins.
PROBIOTICS
Most of your immune system is located in you gut, which is why it is a good idea to take daily probiotics.
Probiotics promote good digestive and immune health, we use for BioGaia for ourselves and my toddler. They have drops for infants, and chewable tablets for kids, the adult ones are also chewable.
Other ways to help support your immune system
EAT A HEALTHY BALANCED DIET
I know this is easier said than done, but it’s important to eat a balanced diet. You can take all the supplements you want but if you are eating junk all day chances are you are more likely to get sick.
HYDRATE
Water plays an important role in your body, which is why you can be hospitalized if you are dehydrated. Make sure you care drinking plenty of water to help support your immune system.
