Tackle the most time consuming area on days you are off
For our family room the junk dresser was definitely the most time consuming area to declutter, yes I said a whole junk DRESSER not just one drawer. So I made sure to do it on a day I was off and didn’t have errands to run.
If you didn’t remember you had it do you really need it?
Probably not, because if you did you would remember you had it. Look around and see what you haven’t used in years, and get rid of it so you can make space for the stuff you actually use.
Remove any decoration that you no longer like, or never really loved
Do you really need all those DVDs?
I am pretty sure we had over 100 DVDs, yet we rarely ever touched them anymore (they were all ridiculously dusty). We decided to keep the Disney DVDs as well as a few other movies & shows that we really loved and have watched multiple times.
If you have kids-Decide what toys you will keep
Look through all the toys and decide what needs to be thrown away donated. kept, or rotated out.
If you can’t let go of it because you might need it one day
Then put it in a box or bag in your garage and if it stays untouched for a month or two, then you really don’t need it just say goodbye. I am very guilty of this I hold on to things because I might need it one day, in reality it stays untouched for years.
Tackling specific areas of your family room
Toys
After you have decided what toys you will keep, designate one or two basket for those toys. This will look different depending on how many kids you have. We have only one basket of toys in the family room, because Aiden has his own playroom so we only keep a few toys in there.
If your family room is your child’s play room, the I would suggest getting a shelve with hidden storage that blends in with your decor.
DVD storage
When it comes to DVD’s, having them in some sort of storage container out of site makes your space looks cleaner and more organized. Even if the DVD’s are just thrown in there.
We decided to go with these basket, we’ve had them for a while so I could not find the exact ones but I linked some other options for you here and here. You really can’t go wrong with any baskets as long as you get one that you can’t see what’s inside while is is displayed.
The junk drawer / dresser
In our case it was the junk dresser, I am guilty of literally throwing in there everything that didn’t have a home. All of the drawers were overflowing to the point that I had to push stuff down to be able to close the drawer.
This is how we organized our dresser, this will look different based on your life style.
I separated most of these drawers with these baskets we had our basement, they use to be in our pantry
Shelving
I wanted to keep this as clean and clutter free possible, the less things you have on display the cleaner your family room will look.
We actually installed these shelvers on our own, this was just an empty space so we installed wood panels on the wall and purchased wood boards painted them white and installed them on the wall.
Here’s the before and after
Fireplace Mantle
The decoration of this space changes base on the season we are in, most of the year it stays like this and I usually add more decoration for various holidays.
Here are some other holiday decors of our fire place mantle

This room was one of the easiest space for us to declutter because we didn’t have that many things to beginning with, except for the junk dresser.
