So after going through one of the most wonderful and probably the most traumatic experience in your life (giving birth), you are sent home with this tiny human being that your expected to love protect and keep alive with no instructions manual. I’m telling you right now if you think after watching hundreds of youtube videos and reading hundreds of blog you are ready you are so wrong.
So many questions come up that you never even thought of! What color is the poop suppose to look like? Is it normal that he farts so much? I will go thru a few things that no one really talks about I didn’t even come across most of these things after watching hundreds of youtube videos.
Their ears produce so MUCH wax so much…..
So the wax build up in newborns is real…. When I first brought him home I didn’t think about cleaning his ears I mean he was a newborn fresh out how could his ears need cleaning. Well…. maybe when he was about 4 weeks old and milk drunk I decided to look inside his ear and OH MY GOODNESS THEY WERE DIRTY! I am not exaggerating when I say I went thru 6 ear swabs SIX! How is it possible that such a tiny human can produce sooo much ear wax!
If you look at Aiden’s ears now you would think that I NEVER clean his the, its literally coming out and I clean it at least every other day. So yeah check your babies ears and don’t forget to add baby ear swabs to your list of things to get. Make sure you don’t get regular ones the infant ones are made so you don’t push it too far into babies ears. You can get the infant ear swabs I use HERE.
They are lint magnets!!
Between their toes fingers neck thighs, just everywhere you will find lint. If you own a dog or two that sheds a lot with the fur just floating in the air like me (husky mom here!) you will find that too between all those crevices. Combine that with spit when they discover their fingers and toes it all turns into yuckiness (yes I know that is not a real word). So clean these areas often.
Breastfeeding is Hard
When I was pregnant I decided that my child was not getting any formula ever! only breast milk. I didn’t even research about breastfeeding because I thought it was suppose to be easy and just comes naturally. Everyone talks about how wonderful breastfeeding is that its such a bonding experience with you and your child.
At the hospital all the nurses commented about how great of a latch he had, and how easy this should be for me to feed him. Well it was not easy, it was a struggle and that’s when I quickly changed my mind and did both formula and breast milk for my sanity. I didn’t experience the bond everyone talked about, I didn’t look forward to breastfeeding I dreaded it. Let me tell you even at a couple of hours old these tiny humans have the suction power of a Dyson vacuum set to max it hurt like hell! And lets not even talk about the formula shaming that goes on, we’ll save that for a later post… Just remember fed is best don’t feel guilty for giving your baby formula.
Just Because they don’t have teeth doesn’t mean it won’t hurt when you breastfeed
It hurts like hell just take my word for it….. Sometimes you end up with bruised cracked bleeding nipples. Yes I said bleeding….. It does get better I guess you kind of become numb to the pain, but don’t let anyone lie to you and think it doesn’t hurt in the beginning it hurts.
Mustard looking seeds in the poop is normal
I had no clue that newborn poop would be this bright yellow. It is bright yellow and pasty and looks like mustard seeds….. Its actually a very pretty yellow once you get past the smell….
Red Crystals in newborn diaper is normal
Your newborns first couple of diapers may have pink/red crystals in it and that is because their first couple of pees is really concentrated and may contain uric acid crystals. It doesn’t look like a bloody scene just specs of pink/red crystals in the diaper. Luckily this happened while we were still at the hospital, if this happened at home I probably would have freaked out and went straight to the ER. So don’t be alarmed if you see that.
Baby acne
What baby acne??? Yup you read that right. Not all babies get it some babies get a mild case and some get it pretty bad all over their body. It does go away over time, Aiden did have some acne on his face for about a month or so. I kept his face moisturized with an all purpose balm and cleaned his face with a cleansing water and a cotton ball daily.
The neck gets stinky
So this is one thing I realized before I gave birth. While at work a mom came with her baby to ask me what she could put on her babies neck it was so irritated and raw. She never thought about cleaning her baby neck often. Remember Milk, drool, lint, everything slides in there and if your little one is like mine he will give you a hard time and hold his head straight so you can’t get in there! The best time to do is is when they are sleeping, milk drunk or during bath time.
Since becoming mom I learn something new everyday no matter how many youtube videos or blogs you read you will never be 100% ready. Just take it one day at a time and remember no mama has it together if it seems like it some of us are just better at hiding it than others.
