About 4 years a go while I was in pharmacy school I had a massive migraine that lasted for a couple of days. It was to the point where I was in tears and couldn’t sleep, it worried me so much that I made an appointment with a neurologist.
Well it was a typical doctor appointment instead of figuring out the cause of my migraine he was ready to prescribe me meds. I told him I didn’t want to take medications I wanted to find the cause of my migraines and he suggested keeping a diary. But then again I can’t blame the doctor for automatically wanting to prescribe me medication, lets face it in pharmacy school and medical school we are thought if a patient has a symptom or illness give them a drug for that symptom / illness. So he gave me the choice between three meds that I would take every day as preventative and one I would take on a as needed basis.
So I picked one of the meds and started taking it on a daily basis.
Being in pharmacy school and learning about drugs I knew the potential damage that any medication can do there are no medications that are 100% safe.
After taking it for a week or so I decided I didn’t want to be on medications for the rest of my life for migraines. So I decided to see if the foods I was eating contributed to my migraines, and that is when I decided to eliminate all animal products from my diet. This was REALLY hard because I grew up eating animal products all my life, and I am the biggest cheese lover!
Before eliminating animal products from my diet I had migraines about 3-4 times a week, Excedrin Migraine was my best friend. I always had a bottle with me wherever I went, it was to the point that if I went out and didn’t have the bottle with me I would freak out. Since I’ve had so many migraines a week as long as I can remember I always thought it was normal to get migraines so often well it turns out it was not.
I did not know much about vegan diet so I started researching. Of course when I said I was going vegan everyone had something to say about my protein intake. I will never understands everyones obsession with protein! You really don’t need that much protein! Anyways that is a post for a another time.
The first time that I eliminated all animal products I lasted about 3 months and during those 3 months I did not have a single migraine. I also discovered that dairy was causing me to constantly feel bloated, which I always thought was completely normal.
Since that initial time I removed animal products from my diet I had a aha! moment, maybe animal products really aren’t that good for us…..
This inspired me to do even more research and thats when the NETFLIX documentary binge watching started.. Bellow are a few of my favorite documentaries and they are all available on NETFLIX.
Vegucated
Forks Over Knives
GMO OMG
Fat Sick & Nearly Dead ( This one got me into juicing but thats for a later post….)
Now I am not 100% dairy free but I try to eat as vegan as possible. I Still have my dairy cravings that I am trying to let go of completely so this is a work in progress. If your planning on eating less animal products just be careful not to eat too much vegan junk, just because it is vegan doesn’t mean that it is healthy.
I have noticed since I significantly reduced my dairy consumption I barely have migraines maybe once every couple of weeks. I no longer keep dairy milk or creamer or cheese at home, instead I buy almond or soy based products. I do occasionally eat products with dairy especially when eating out because that is when its the hardest to find dairy free option. But most places will allow you to modify your meals. Unlike what most people think eating Whole Foods animal free does not mean your eating salads all day I promise you! I love flavor and I couldn’t eat something all the time if it does not taste good. Follow my fitness Instagram page to see some vegan meals, my entire page is not vegan but a majority of it is. I will be sharing yummy vegan recipes in the near future so make sure you subscribe!
Here are a few yummy vegan meals I’ve made in the last couple of years to inspire you
I recommend watching the documentaries I mentioned above and as always do your own research and find out what works for you.
As for me I am striving to eat more of a plant base diet and eventually cut off all animal products completely.

Wow, that’s so crazy that just changing your diet help your migraines so much! I’m glad that it did though because nobody should have to walk around with misery or worry about migraines on a day to day basis.
Thank you for sharing your story!
